Our Story
As pediatric emergency nurses at a level I trauma center, we frequently receive patients in a variety of critical scenarios. Due to our central urban location and specialty designations, our facility is lucky enough to have pharmacists on site 24/7 that specialize in pediatric medications and dosing that are prepared at all times to arrive to the bedside when needed to draw up vital medications.
Even in a Level 1 trauma center, however, things don't always go to plan. One night, three patients walked into the emergency department, all suffering from multiple gun shot wounds. Unfortunately due to staffing at the time, pharmacy was only able to be at the bedside of one patient at a time. Sam, in the room with the most critical of the three patients, was without a pharmacist and had to leave the room with each order to pull medications as the situation called for them. This was time consuming, especially in a chaotic and critical situation where multiple people were running to the Pyxis simultaneously. Thankfully each patient was stabilized and transferred to an appropriate level of care, but the situation left Sam wondering if this is what care looks like all the time in a facility without the same resources readily available. Over time, applying experiences and observations from caring for real-life trauma patients, Sam invented OmniDose. Quick administration of the correct medication with the correct dosage can be the factor that gives our patients a fighting chance at a better clinical outcome. We were lucky enough in that situation to have an experienced team of doctors, nurses, and techs that came together for the stabilization of those patients.
But what about mobile emergency response systems and rural hospitals that aren't as equipped for these events?
